1982 St Tropez Aerolite 288

Fixed this one up a little.   (now sold, sadly)

I'm guessing that Mongoose may have had something to do with this as it looks just like some Ammaco Mongoose Factory/Silver Star bikes in pix. Any info would be helpful. Built with spare parts - a fun old bike that actually rides nice.

Re: 1982 St Tropez Aerolite 288

It's a Saint Tropez for sure, it has the original rivited headbadge in place. I'll show some close-ups as soon as the camera is downloaded.  I know St. Tropez was a legit company, but I'm wondering if they had some deal or partnership w/Mongoose.  I saw a couple of early 80's Ammaco factory team Mongoose -Silver Star f/f that looks just like it with the same forks and all.  It may have been heavy with low-end parts when it was original, but it's fairly light now. Not an expensive brand, but rare none the less.

I'm looking for the following frames, frame & forks or completes by BMX products:

Re: 1982 St Tropez Aerolite 288

My First bike was an 86 Aerolite that I bought new for $150 at Ross bike shop in NY. In my case, the complete bike was a knock off of an 85 GT Pro. Side by side the frame was identical except for the GT imprint on the back of the frame stand. I hated that bike to be honest and it cost me many beatings from the neighborhood punks. it was even stolen and returned. On the same day my bro got a Dyno Detour (about $300) but, I tricked on that Aerolite in ways that turned his hair white. I know this has no relation to the bike above, just didn't see a lot of info on Aerolite.

I'm only right 80% of the time and there's a 50% chance of that.

Re: 1982 St Tropez Aerolite 288

I'm thinking that St. Tropez just took existing designs and slapped their logo on em.  I have not been able to find any solid info on this company's BMX lines.

these were a low end bike shop line in the late 70s early 80s and i think were primarily distributed in the northeast, if im not mistaken they were made in taiwan and the name was to try and imply french

i dont know if they had their own assembly lines , or had their stuff manufactured by someone else and rebadged it , but i tend to doubt it would be mongoose

i dont know if this helps at all , i couldnt find much of any information on mine when i had it

Re: 1982 St Tropez Aerolite 288

Yeah, the quality looks like a typical low-end bike shop bike.  The frame is very close to a Mongoose in appearance, but the quality of the welds is so-so.  (Not snot welds, but not a great job.)  The chrome held up surprisingly well.  It also has one of those "Hi Tensile" decals on the top tube like some of the low end Rampars and DB's had.
