2013 Intense Code Pro-XL

My new racer; ready for its first race tomorrow.

Having become an ABA (sorry, USA BMX) member this year (August 2018) for the first time in about 35 years, I decided to build a new-school racer.  I picked up this near-NOS (if you can call 2013 "old" stock) Intense from a racer's dad who intended to start racing, but never did and let the bike sit in his garage for the last five years.  Taking it out to the track for its first race tomorrow afternoon (North SeaTac BMX - Oct. 20, 2018).

The bike is largely stock; parts I've changed out are as follows:
Bars - S&M Race XLT, 9" x 29"Grips - A'me UnitronPedals - Wellgo BeartrapsSeat - Elevn pivotalPost - Insight pivotalClamp - quick releaseTires - Kenda Konversion whitewalls

Nice! So how did the first race go??

Check out my 1983 VDC-built Trident, 1983 Kuwi Laserlite, 2010 GT Ultrabox 2, 2011 Crupi race rig and prototype Quamen, plus the all things Crupi & old school scene in Japan threads. Always interested in buying used, mid-school race plates and pads - UGP, Knucklebone, Lizard Skins and the like!

It went well; the bike felt quicker, more agile, and much more stable and composed than the Skyway I had been using.  The Skyway's a great looking bike (my opinion, anyway), but this one definitely feels a lot lighter and it seems like the geometry is more conducive to a good riding position whereas the Skyway feels too upright and too far forward (and yes, I dropped the Skyway's seat when racing; no way I could run it that high on the track).

As for the race itself, we had a really low turnout so I ended up (in my third 46-50 novice race) in a combined 46-50 novice-intermediate-expert class.  Suffice to say I wasn't in contention, but I also wasn't as far off the pace as I thought I would be.  It was my first time on any bike in about a month and a half, so I'm thinking if I can get to riding more regularly and get out on a track to practice once in a while, I might actually be in the mix before too long.
