2009 Faction Zeitgeist 22

BMX at %110!  22" Oddity from the UK.

Since I got back into BMX bikes, I'd been thinking that I wanted something a little larger, but not a cruiser.  Then I discovered the Zeitgeist.  I bought this one used as a Frame/Fork/Wheel/Tire set from another Museum member.  It feels a lot like a mid-school bike, but about 10% bigger.
Current Build: * Frame/Fork:  4130 cromoly Faction Zeitgeist 22"
* Bars / Grips / Bar Ends:  Odyssey Lumberjack / Stolen Money / Stolen Vortex Alloy
* Stem:  Stolen Clutch
* Headset: Cane Creek S-3
* Cranks/Spindle:  Stolen Team 175 / Profile titanium GDH
* Sprocket:  28T Tree Lite spline drive
* Chain:  KMC Devil 101 (D101)
* Pedals:  Odyssey Twisted PC
* Seat:  SDG F-Style
* Seat Post / Clamp:  Odyssey Convertible / Profile Slim Jim
* Brake / Lever:  Dia-Compe Hombre U-Brake (with Fiesta upgrade, Kool Stop Supra 2 purple pads) / Odyssey Monolever Medium
* Wheels:  36h Stolen Roulette cassette (Odyssey clone) with 11T Odyssey driver, laced to Velocity Taipan 22" rims
* Tires:  Unbranded high pressure dirt
July, 2011It is a little on the heavy side, but not too bad with the components I have.  Much of the weight seems to come from the wheels and tires.
To get good chain alignment, I needed to move the cone spacer to the outside of the sprocket.  The 19mm sprocket adapter is now against the bearing and makes a pretty good minimal spacer.  It helped the alignment a lot, but it meant that I needed to put a few spacers on the drive bolt to keep the sprocket from twisting.  It was a minor pain, but it is working well.  However, if I ever change out this sprocket, I will definitely go with a spline drive next time.
October, 2011 Update:The rear Quando hub had been a little clunky, and I wasn't too impressed when I rebuilt it, so I had new wheels built.  I took the opportunity to upgrade a few other parts too.  Since my replacement hub was an Odyssey clone, I was able to use an 11T driver.  I already had a 28T Tree spline drive sprocket from a previous build that matched up well with the 11T driver and 22" wheels.  The chain alignment is perfect now, and the drive train feels much more precise.  This is the second bike I've built with a spline drive sprocket, and I'm hooked.  Since the driver and sprocket are a bit larger, I have a bit more chain clearance around the chain stay, so I don't feel the need to have the chain so tight.
I also installed a Dia-Tech Fiesta upgrade kit on the humble Hombres.  Maybe it's all in my head, but it felt better to me, and some of the hardware is just nicer.  To me, it was worth a few bucks.

Here's a shot from the post upgrade test ride.  Did a little bar hopping with a buddy (that's his Mongoose).  Good times!
Here is a comparison animation with my 1995 Mongoose Expert Pro.  (It may take a little time to load)

Thanks.  smile  Glad you like the comparison picture.  Eventually I'll post a few more comparisons with other bikes.

Re: 2009 Faction Zeitgeist 22

Enjoy it, Frank! It really helped me get back on a 20" and improve my riding ability. Now, if Faction can get their sh$t in gear an get that Amero in full production, I'll be happy!

Best of luck w/the 22"

Charlie
