1998 GT Tour

Ride #3 - Funky Freestyle Tank....for Josh (or Dad?)

We've been looking for a freestyle bike for Josh to use on the freestyle parks instead of his race bikes.  This popped up locally and looked the part.  But when we picked it up, we realized that this is the heaviest bike ever made....made for big boys and big ramps.  Large platform and super strong.  So while Josh doodles on it, it's a bit big & heavy for him at the moment.....but it's not too big for big daddy!  In short these bikes were the best vert bikes GT had to offer in '98 at the end of their US ownership.  US made and top grade parts.  This particular one is a nearly all original factory complete and sports an early for '98 S/N (1197XXXX).  Specs (updated Jan '11):

-'98 GT Tour F/F (Pacman drop outs; 100% Chromoly F/F)
-'10 Odyssey Matt Berringer Grips (replaced OURY grips from first post)
-'98 GT "Hi Riser" Vert bars (Chromoly) (Extended back to original length by Frame Doctor @ Jan '11 update)
-'98 GT USA-made XL Piston stem
-'98 Dia Compe "Tank" Aheadset
-'98 Weinmann Zac 2525 double wall 48 spoke chromeplated aluminum rims, SS Wheelsmith spokes, brass nipples, GT Mohawk sealed bearing high flange hubs
-'10 Odyssey Mike Aitken tires, 1.90"
-'98 ACS Claw (16 tooth) freewheel
-'98 GT 1/2" x 3/32" chain
-'98 GT stamped Profile cranks (175 mm, 45 tooth) + GT Flycutter chainwheel
-'98 GT (VP821) pedals
-'98 GT padded FS saddle
-'98 GT microadjust chromoly seat post
-'98 GT braze on (integrated) seat post clamp
-'98 Dia Compe FS990 front caliper + '98 Dia Compe AD990 rear caliper + 2 x '98 Dia Compe Tech7 levers
-'98 SST Oryg dentangler & gyro
-'98 GT steel pegs

Nice, how much were the bars extended?

I'm looking for the following frames, frame & forks or completes by BMX products:
MotoTrac (nickle or chrome), Racer-X or a Super-X (with the double gussets).
Thanks wink
I'm also johnng23604 at "Retro-goose", "VintageBMX" & "RADbmx"

Re: 1998 GT Tour

What...."Funky Freestyle Tank"?  It's a perfect description.  tongue

So black or red tires?

Thanks for the notes, Duke.

Re: 1998 GT Tour

wink
hhmmm...i would say both as long as they have that classic gum-wall like the stock tires had.
But that's just me.

Another opinion would be great too.

Sweet, mine is the Black/White with a dark twist. "F.F.T." is the perfect name for them.

Re: 1998 GT Tour

Absolutely amazing ride. I’ve wanted one of these since they first rolled down the showroom floor. Let me know if you ever find on for sale! I rode my rich friends one and still to this day probably have two dents in my shins from a tailwhip that I miss judged. Also the thing landed on top of me and stabbed right into my left thigh. Superglued it as fast as I could hahaha feels great to remember things like that!

(WTB-83/84 Kashimax In Red)

Won’t deal with BigP, JayEdiesel, SteelHorses, dcoy1973, TABS!
