Re: 1980 Team Mongoose

Moza, Here is another example of a early mongoose frame powdercoated white with Bobby Encinas ( Team Shimmano ) decals. To me it is easier to find someone to powdercoat than to refinish or re nickel plus it is a lot cheaper

Re: 1980 Team Mongoose

cool bike, and Bobby Encinas is one all-time greatest guys. met him in 1980 & the Houston Astrodome. he took time to politely answer all my stupid questions. complimented me on my bike, watched my first moto & afterward gave me tips on stuff i could improve on. that was a day i'll never forget. thanx for bringing back some old memories mcater.

Re: 1980 Team Mongoose

check this out, my brother (jj5150) called me yesterday and said he'd found the GNC program of when we raced in Houston (turned out to be 1981). bobby even gave me his address on the back cover (forgot all about that).

Re: 1980 Team Mongoose

Whilst I appreciate the sentiment I can't see that this is in any way a replica of any bike Bobby Encinas ever rode.

To start with no team rider for Mongoose or BMX Products rode a painted frame bike, Team bikes were either show chrome (Supergoose for example) or show chrome with a red or blue candy coat of epoxy.

Given that Bobby Encinas was sponsored by Shimano but rode on a BMX Products frame (more often than not a candy blue Team Mongoose) most other components on the bike would be Shimano; Cranks (either Dura Ace, 600 or DX) Brakes (Tourney) Three different types of lever could have been used - all manufactured by Shimano.

Either Shimano DX or MX products would have made up the remainder of the build (Hubs), dependent on the era you are trying to represent, other supplementary products such as headsets, bottom brackets and forks were most likely manufactured by Tange, distributed by Shimano in the United States.

Rims are the only mystery here but the general consensus is that Araya rims were preferred.

So, in conclusion, it's a nice looking bike with sticker set that could have been bought if you clipped a coupon out of BMX Action Magazine and sent $10 to Shimano, It's relevance ceases there.
