1998 GT Speed Series XL
1998 GT Speed Series XL
Grape-Ade - Custom done GT Speed Series in purple w/Power Series decals. (Note: Power Series frames did not have the "Box" chain stays)
Here is the bike I put together for my youngest daughter who is graduating from Middle school on 6/19/09. This was the complete (except for wheels) that I scored from "jayoldmanbmx" a few months ago. I bought some new Sun rims to pair up with some old school low flange GT sealed bearing hubs and went with a custom powder coat job through my friend Joe who owns and operates Brooklyn Machine Works (BMW). It's actually a clear coat with a purple tint to it and it looks wicked in person. The pictures do not really convey the look of the powder coat job! Also, I picked up a few other parts from some members here, like the Crupi pedals and polished GT stem from Stonie. I went with a new seat with purple stitching and a puple brake lever, purple front axle nuts and nipples and the last addition, the purple overdrive chainwheel from Toby2D just last week.
Parts & Specs:
• Frame: 1998 GT Speed Series XL
• Serial#: 07988556 XL
• Tubes: 6061 heat treated Aluminum
• Forks: GT Stiletto 1 1/8" non-threaded

• Seat: Shadow Conspiracy slim seat
• Seatpost clamp: GT
• Levers: Odyssey
• Front brake/pads: N/A
• Rear brake/pads: Silver Tektro V-brakes
• Brake cable, rear: Odyssey Linear cable
• Headset: Silver Chris King 1 1/8"
• Cranks: GT Power Series (Show) cranks 180mm
• Pedals: GT Platform 9/16" re-powdered black & Crupie Silver w/polished purple cages.
• Front sprocket: Purple GT Overdrive Chain wheel 44T

• Rear sprocket/cog: 16T

Re: 1998 GT Speed Series XL
Wow!!! That was super fast approval on this one! I submitted it this afternoon and went for a ride then I came back and here it is in the museum already!
Hobbes - thanks for the props man. I'm giving this to my daughter this coming Friday as a graduation gift and she doesn't yet know it's for her. Trying to find a nice big purple bow to put on it Thursday night while she's asleep.

Furious - I know! When I first saw this color on a MTB in my friend's shop, my jaw dropped!!! I was originally thinking of going with the OG Hutch Hollywood lavendar, but I immediately knew then what color to do her bike in and I'm glad it turned out as nice as it did. She doesn't know it's hers yet, but she sure loves it and was so interested, she asked me a bunch of questions when I was putting it together!

Yep...reminds me of the swingarm on my old Ninja motorcycles. I wish they had kept this design for their current models.

Re: 1998 GT Speed Series XL
looks absolutely sick!
btw, are you sure its a speed series? i noticed it doesnt have an integrated seatpost clamp,
which leads me to believe its a power series...
my 98 speed series has the integrated clamp... check it out in my bikes.

Thanks for the compliments and yeah, I'm sure. What you have is the Speed Series Team. The team model is the only one that comes with the integrated clamp, but the speed series is the only one with the box stays. I just used the power series decals due to the color of the set, which I felt went better than the yellow & red.
BTW, I love your Speed Series too. I saw yours while building this one up and I was immediately impressed! I especially like the restored seat; great job with that!

Re: 1998 GT Speed Series XL
Duke, olskoolbmxican and ogbmx...thanks for the kind words! I did give it to her Friday and she was completely stoked!!! I was so excited to give it to her that I totally forgot to take pictures!!! The weather has been so crappy here lately, that she hasn't had an opportunity to take it for a ride yet, but if it holds out for this weekend, we're taking it out for sure! I'll def take pics then and post some here.
