1980 speedwell Australian bmx
Dan original, built from Kambalda tip, 20 years ago when I was 10.
I lived in a small town called Kambalda between 1985 and 1990, my Grandma lived in Kalgoorlie, about 60 ks (40 mile) away. (Both are red dirt mining towns. ) I wasn't always lucky enough to get my bike into the station wagon so I built this bike to leave there. I can't tell you much about the bike other than the frame is a speedwell and that all the parts on it are genuine rubbish tip items (,bar wheel nuts, never lucky enough to get wheel nuts, always had to shell out the big bucks at the bike shop in Kalgoorlie). Me and a mate used to ride out of town 5 miles every Saturday, round up all the good bits, stash them somewhere, then ride home fast as hell and get one of our mums to take us back out with a trailer to retrieve it. I ended up with a push bike wrecking yard, have photos somewhere, when I find them I'll put them up. One innovation you may like is the 'glass proof' tyres. Old tube wrapped around less old tube, then stuff into narrow tyre with bead cut off, then stuffed into the chunkiest tyre we could find. When we moved to the city in 91 this bike stayed up there. It was only brought down a few years ago and has not been touched since. <p> Other features are home made coaster brake strap, well used nut protector on top bar and bent forks from bashing over dry rivers, trees rocks and other stuff in the bush.
