1988 Peregrine High Performance B1

Peregrine freestyle bikes first appeared in 1987. There was total four different models ranging from two beginner/intermediate models to expert and pro models. The High Performance B1 was the "little brother" of the flagship model, the B1XT and the entry level bikes were called Peregrine Expert and Peregrine Pro. All models shared same frame geometry. The only noticeable difference between the Pro/Expert and the B1/B1XT was in the platform/toptube/seat tube joints area and ofcourse, the half-chrome/half-paint finish. The top framestand platform of Pro & Expert resembles the shape of Haro Sport platform. 

The main difference between a complete B1 & B1XT was the slightly different selection of parts. Example; B1 came with 1-pc cranks where as B1XT came with Peregrine 3-pc cranks and so forth.
Probably the most well known sponsored pro freestyler riding a B1/B1XT was the flatland rider Craig LePage.

What i personally like the most in this bike, is the ovalized (flat) toptube which is unlike anything i've ever seen/experienced before. From the side it looks as if the frame has twin top tubes, but another look from different angle revelas that isn't the case. The oval top tube provides pretty good standing area throughout its length. The extension or the "step" at the end of framestand platform is somewhat useless piece of 80's design but looks cool and is super-trick, nonetheless. The shape of it instantly reminds me of clamp tube turned upside down of the Peregrine Q-Bars. 

There are two cable guides brazed-on underneath the oval top tube for lower rear cable routing. The framestand tubes as well as the little step/extension behind it are knurled for superior grip. There's Peregrine logo stamped gusset plates where the downtube and headtube meet. The forks are tapered and have two cable guides. Overall the bike looks like a freestyler that could handle a lot of abuse. Everything is so well made.

I came up with the pink/blue/chrome on the bike theme because of the well survived frame decals with same colors. The fork is missing the original decals but those shouldn't be too difficult to replicate. The bike feels extremely solid, thanks to the custom made 95-spoke Peregine Super Pro's and the sturdy frame design. The weld quality of the frame & fork is excellent as well as the quality of the chrome plating and the blue finish.

The Pro and Expert models didn't have the extra step behind the framestand platform by the way. The 1988 Freestylin' test review says the B1 came with 75-degree steering angle, which i highly doubt. It looks and feels more like 73.5 or 74 but it's hard to say really. I wish there was a way to actually measure these things.

  • Switched from the blue Odyssey RX-3 levers to very rare blue Odyssey RX-5's in jan-feb 2007 in order to make the parts selection on this bike more year-specific. 


Previous updates:

  • 44T Tioga CD chainring for better gearing, which replaced the previous 42T chainring in summer 2006.
